A Letter from Procrastination…

By February 7th, 2022No Comments

Dear Lani,

How are you? I hear that you want to start a new project. That seems like a great idea! I’m so excited to help you get started. It looks like you’ve got your workspace set up, materials gathered and a timeline planned out. Good job! Well done! Before we dig in, have you organized all your supplies, cleaned your workspace and put away your other works in progress? That scarf over there is almost finished, are you sure you don’t want to have that feeling of completion before moving on? It feels so good to finish something, doesn’t it?

I’ve been meaning to talk to you about this new project we are embarking on together. It sounds really great, but are you sure you’re ready to start? Have you really thought through the details and planned your time? I think you’d be better prepared if you updated your planner and reorganized your yarn first. I think you need to build a playlist that is tailored to this project, otherwise you’ll never get through it. Once you’ve done that, create an inspiration board to keep you moving. A few motivational phrases, hand lettered on patterned paper using artists brush markers, then framed and hung above your desk, and you’ll be ready. I’m really proud of you and all the preparation you’ve put in. Let’s get started, shall we? Wow, look at the time! Leave it till tomorrow, you need to sleep now…

Wow, that’s really looking good! Let’s take a few pictures so we can share our progress on social media. No, Lani, I don’t think the light is quite right. We should really take these in daylight to get the truest color. It’s too late in the day to do it today, better to set it aside, get the pictures tomorrow and then continue. If you keep working on it before taking the pictures you’ll miss the opportunity to share how it looks now. You know your followers want to see the work in progress. It will make the reveal of the final product that much better. Speaking of your followers, have you checked your email/instagram/twitter/facebook today?

Good morning! What a beautiful day. Did you take those pictures we talked about? You should really have a cup of coffee and eat an apple before you do. Drink a full glass of water and take your vitamins. There, now we can go find a sunny spot for that picture! Wait, are you wearing deodorant? And did you brush your teeth? Back into the house right now; you wouldn’t want to forget those before you leave the house. Whew! Aren’t you glad I had you check? It turns out you already did those things, but wouldn’t you have been embarrassed if you hadn’t? And you still had time to get out the door and make it to work on time.

Of course now it’s night again, and you haven’t gotten that picture yet. Maybe the craft light at your desk will be good enough. It does have a daylight bulb in it after all. And you really do need to get back to work. Right after you check your email. I know you’ve had a long day. Maybe you should read tonight instead of working on your project. You’ll feel more like working on it tomorrow and the work will be better because you’ll be well rested. You should set your alarm, get up early and tackle it fresh. “Yawn.” Let’s get some shut eye, eh?

Good morning again! Sleep well? No? Well then you should hit snooze 7-8 times, after all, you work hard and you deserve the rest. Your project will still be there later in the day. Anyway, if you work on it now it won’t be any good, since you aren’t feeling inspired. What if you force yourself to do it now and it’s terrible?  You should really wait until inspiration strikes. I’m sure that’ll be this afternoon. I know you are running out of time, but Future Lani can deal with it; don’t worry about it. Right now, take care of You.

That deadline’s really looming now, isn’t it? Don’t you enjoy a big, juicy deadline as much as I do? The closer the better, I say. You and I both know you do your best work under pressure. That’s when your creativity flourishes, and your hands fly over the work. What a rush! Make sure to get some pictures as you work, and to post them to social media. Stay hydrated! Check your email! Straighten those motivational images you hung. You wouldn’t want to be distracted, would you? Well, it looks like you’ve got things under control here. See you in a while.

Take it easy,

Procrastination

P.S. Don’t you need to start your Christmas shopping early? What about those birthdays coming up?
